How to apply for the Capital One Quicksilver World Elite Mastercard

Check first

  • Match for new cardholders only: the offer must be shown to you when you apply
  • No other Capital One card: an existing Capital One account, a Capital One application in the last 30 days, or a Capital One account not in good standing in the last year can get you declined
  1. Check you qualify Income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household. You need to live in Canada and be the age of majority in your province.
  2. Have this ready Your address and how long you've lived there, your employer and yearly income, and your monthly rent or mortgage. Your SIN is optional for a credit card; you can leave it blank.
  3. Expect a credit check Applying adds a hard inquiry to your credit report, which lowers your score a little for a few months. Space applications about 90 days apart.
  4. Apply on Capital One's own site Apply online from the bank's product page, where the offer above is shown. This isn't an affiliate link: we earn nothing if you apply.Apply on Capital One's site →
  5. After you're approved Put the spending needed for the welcome offer on the card before the deadline, and pay the full balance every month.

How to use it

  • Groceries: every run at a grocery store. Walmart and Costco do not count as grocery stores and earn 1%
  • Gas and EV charging: every fill-up. Gas at supermarkets and wholesale clubs (Costco) may earn only 1%
  • Dining, bills, everything else: use a 2% card. This one pays 1%. The Rogers Red World Elite pays 2% for Rogers customers, also for $0. See "Best paired with" below
  • Travel outside Canada: use it abroad. Purchases made outside Canada have no foreign-exchange fee
  • Welcome offer, year one only: Capital One matches every dollar of cash back you earn in your first 365 days. The match lands as a statement credit around month 13–14. Keep the card open and paid on time until it posts, or you lose it
  • Apply from a page that shows the offer: it must be presented to you when you apply
  • Example: $800/month groceries + $250/month gas = $378 a year at 3%. Add $250 dining + $300 bills at 1% = $444 a year. Year one, with the match: $888

Rogers Red World Elite card

Rogers Red World Elite

  • This card: groceries, gas / ev
  • Rogers Red World Elite: dining & restaurants, bills & subscriptions, travel, transit, drugstore / pharmacy, entertainment, everything else
  • Together: $726 a year after both fees, vs $552 with this card alone
  • Quicksilver World Elite needs $80,000 personal or $150,000 household income
  • Rogers pays 2% with an active Rogers, Fido or Shaw service, 1.5% without

If your stores take Amex: Scotiabank Gold Amex for groceries, dining & restaurants, transit, entertainment makes it $888 a year. Costco and Loblaw-banner grocers don't take Amex.

Computed on our standard household ($30,000 a year): each kind of spending goes to whichever card pays more, both fees taken off. Partners are everyday, category and churning cards on Visa or Mastercard. Points at their simplest redemption. Welcome offers not included.

Pros

  • No annual fee, and up to 5 additional cards at no charge
  • 3% on groceries and on gas and EV charging, with no cap on either
  • Welcome offer: year one pays 6% on groceries and gas, 2% on everything else (all cash back matched, no limit)
  • 0% foreign-exchange fee on purchases made outside Canada (Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite and Rogers Red World Elite charge 2.5%; Rogers offsets it with 3% back on US dollars)
  • Beats the Rogers Red World Elite on the example spending ($444 vs $384 at 2%) because groceries and gas are most of it
  • 20.9% interest on purchases, cash advances and balance transfers

Cons

  • 1% on dining, bills and everything else. A Rogers customer earns 2% on those with the Rogers Red World Elite
  • Walmart and Costco groceries earn 1%. If you shop there, a flat 2% card pays more
  • From year two, the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite pays about $54 more on the same spending: 4% on groceries and bills plus 2% on gas = $618, minus its $120 fee = $498, vs $444 here
  • The year-one match is paid only after year one, only on cash back that posts within the 365 days, and only if the account is open and in good standing. The offer can be cancelled at any time
  • Purchases through digital wallets or third-party payment apps may not earn 3%
  • No travel medical or trip cancellation insurance
  • Needs $80,000 personal or $150,000 household income; an existing Capital One card can get you declined

Insurance included

  • Flight delay: $250 per 24 hours, up to $1,000 per trip, after 4 hours
  • Delayed bags: $100 a day per person, up to 3 days
  • Lost bags: $1,000 per trip
  • Travel accident: $500,000 per person, on fares charged to the card
  • Rental car damage: up to 31 days (a longer rental voids all of it), cars up to $65,000; decline the agency's cover
  • Purchases: 90 days of theft/damage cover, $60,000 lifetime per account
  • Extended warranty: doubles the maker's warranty, up to +1 year
  • Price protection: up to $100 per item ($500 a year) if the price drops within 30 days

Maximums as Capital One lists them. Conditions apply; the insurance certificate decides claims.

Perks

  • Quick Check: see if you are pre-approved, with no effect on your credit score
  • Credit Keeper: free credit score in the app
  • Alerts: real-time fraud and bill-increase alerts
  • Mastercard Global Service: emergency card replacement and cash abroad
