How to apply for the United MileagePlus Neo World Elite Mastercard

Check first

  • Bonus only if you've never opened this card: other Neo cards don't count against you
  • MileagePlus account required: Neo creates one during the application if you don't have one
  • Not if you opened a Neo card recently: no secured Neo card in the last 3 months, or regular Neo card in the last 6 months
  1. Check you qualify Income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household. You need to live in Canada and be the age of majority in your province.
  2. Have this ready Your address and how long you've lived there, your employer and yearly income, and your monthly rent or mortgage. Your SIN is optional for a credit card; you can leave it blank.
  3. Expect a credit check Applying adds a hard inquiry to your credit report, which lowers your score a little for a few months. Space applications about 90 days apart.
  4. Apply on Neo's own site Apply online from the bank's product page, where the offer above is shown. This isn't an affiliate link: we earn nothing if you apply.Apply on Neo's site →
  5. After you're approved Put the spending needed for the welcome offer on the card before the deadline, and pay the full balance every month.

How to use it

  • Welcome offer: 5,000 miles on your first purchase, 15,000 more after $3,000 in 3 months. Then 5,000 miles each year the fee renews (you need one purchase in the past year)
  • United and Star Alliance flights: buy direct from the airline for 1.25 miles per $1 and the free bag. Travel agencies earn 0.75
  • Groceries and dining: 1 mile per $1
  • Everything else: use another card. This one pays 0.75 miles per $1 and charges 3% on foreign currency
  • Example: $800/month groceries + $250 dining + $250 gas + $300 bills = 17,550 miles a year, worth $176–$351 if a mile is worth 1–2¢ (our assumption), $87–$262 after the fee
